Welcome to the first weekend of 2013! It's finally here, after that long holiday break and three hard days of work.

Carolina Athletics

Men's basketball begins conference play with a trip to Virginia. That game is Sunday at 8 on ESPNU. Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett is not sure if senior point guard Jontel Evans will play.

After a huge upset win over Maryland on Thursday, women's basketball hosts Virginia Tech on Sunday at 2.

Carolina diving is one of 15 teams participating in the Tennessee Diving Invitational in Knoxville.

Former DTHer Jonathan Jones has a story on Tyler Zeller's transition to the NBA.

In case you missed it, our Jenn DiMeo learned a few things at the Men's Basketball Holiday Clinic.

Baseball America's Aaron Fitt (another former DTH scribe) named Carolina's Scott Forbes and Scott Jackson two of the top assistant coaches in the nation.

Diversions

Former Virginia football head coach Al Groh (also an assistant at Carolina at one time) was fired as Georgia Tech defensive coordinator midway through the season. He spoke to the Roanoke Times and did not mince words about his most recent employer.

The best story I read this week? This one on Apollo Robbins, professional pickpocket.

Finally, Sunday night at 9 is the U.S. Season Three premiere of Downton Abbey. I know what you're thinking; you can DVR the game.
